Pandolfo Reschi

(Gdansk 1643–1693 Florence) A wild boar hunt in a wooded landscape near a waterfall, oil on canvas, 46 x 63 cm, in a lovely gilded Empire frame of around 1810

We are grateful to Dr Hermann Jedding, Hamburg, for confirmation of the attribution of this work to Pandolfo Reschi (letter dated July 2009). Pandolfo Reschi Italianised his German name, Resch, shortly after his arrival in Rome, where he was active in the workshops of Jacques Courtois and Salvator Rosa. The influence of the latter’s idealised landscapes is as evident in his work as is the powerful, free painting style of Courtois. He was also influenced by Pieter Mulier, known as Cavalier Tempesta, with whom he shared a house. On a journey through Lombardy he got to know the landscape painting of the region, before settling in Florence. Here he became the protégé of some of the more renowned collectors of the city, such as Cardinal Francisco de’ Medici and the Marchese Gerini. The present painting dates from the last decade of the 17th century and may be compared with the works of Reschi, which have a similar painting technique and similar compositional elements. These indicate that they were produced in the tradition of Rosa, such as, for instance, the ‘Landscape with a waterfall’ (Palazzo Barberini, Rome) or the ‘bear hunt’ in the Villa della Petraia near Florence.
