Waerdigh painted genre scenes and landscapes in the style of Gerard Dou, Willem van Mieris and Cornelis Poelenburgh. He was one of the few genre painters in Northern Germany in the 18th century who was of supra-regional importance. Trained in the workshop of Christian Nordwic, he settled in Hamburg. In 1766 he moved to Plön to the court of the Dowager Duchess Christiane Irmgardis of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbirg-Plön, née Countess Reventlow. Together with her husband, she had turned Plön into a Nordic court of the Muses. The present painting has been dated to 1766, that is, to Waerdigh’s arrival in Plön.
