The foundation of the Rothenbaum Pharmacy at Speersort (Hamburg 13, Hansastr. 19) probably dates back to 1618. This pharmacy can thus be regarded as the second oldest in Hamburg. In 1818, its owner was Peter Christian Schaumann. The earliest surviving document from 1848 mentions apothecary Radecke, who after Schaumann’s death had married his daughter and acted as the pharmacy’s administrator. On 1 April of the same year, the management was transferred to J.H.C. Riebe. On 1 January 1851, the pharmacy was sold to Dr Theodor Ludwig Wimmel, who was also an active trade chemist. In fact, his activity as a chemist brought him more profit than the pharmacy, which was located at the rather small Speersort, directly opposite the Ohrtmann Pharmacy. On 1 October 1880, he appointed his son, Dr Carl Wimmel, as administrator, since as a member of the Pharmacopoeia Commission he often had to spend long periods of time in Berlin.

On 25 February 1892, the Medical Council approved the granting of a license for a pharmacy in the suburbs of Rotherbaum-Harvestehude. On 28 July 1892, Dr Wimmel was granted permission to close the pharmacy at Speersort 8 (until 1834 no. 94) and relocate to Harvestehude. The official opening, under the name “Apotheke in Harvestehude von Th. Wimmel Dr.”, took place on 1 December 1892, on Hansastraße 1 (since 1900 no. 19). The present elements of pharmacy furnishings come from precisely this pharmacy that reopened in 1892.
