The present painting numbers among a series of seascapes that the artist executed during his sojourns in Portugal in the 1780s. In addition to his marine subjects, the artist was celebrated for his landscapes and he was admired for his depiction of light and atmosphere. Apart from his journeys to Portugal, Pillement worked for the courts of Madrid, Warsaw and Vienna.
The Tagus is the longest river on the Iberian Penisula, flowing from Spain to Portugal.
