Charles de La Porte (Paris 1602–1664) was a French aristocrat and a general. His other titles were first Marquis and then Duke of La Meilleraye, Duke of Rethel, Baron of Parthenay and of Saint-Maixtent, Count of Secondigny, Seigneur of Le Boisliet, La Lunardiere, La Jobeliniere and Villeneuve. De la Porte was also a cousin of Cardinal Richelieu. In 1639, he lead Louis XIII’s army and laid siege to Hesdin. After its capture De La Porte was made Marshal of France. In 1642, he further conquered Perpignan, Salses-le-Chateau and Roussillon for the crown.
A similar portrait of De La Porte, on canvas and measuring 73 x 52 cm., by an unknown artist, is kept at the Musée National des Châteaux de Versailles in France. In this portrait the sitter appears of slightly older age.
