Olga Wisinger-Florian

Olga Wisinger-Florian - Obrazy 19. století

(Vienna 1844–1926 Grafenegg)
A bouquet of wildflowers, signed O. Wisinger-Florian, oil on panel, 30 x 20 cm, framed, (W)

We are grateful to Mag. Alexander Giese for his scietific assistance:
Olga Wisinger-Florian was active in the group affiliated with Emil Jakob Schindler, and can be categorised as an “atmospheric impressionist” in terms of style. Prominent subjects across her oeuvre include landscapes and floral still lifes, which stand out in her later work due to their strong colours and dynamic brushstrokes. She developed significant autonomy in floral painting by reinterpreting traditional Biedermeier floral composition. These impressive works led to her making a name for herself both in Austria and internationally.
She presented one of her floral images at the Paris Salon, which was received to great critical acclaim. With no direct competition, she attained great prominence with her floral art. In addition to traditional compositions featuring flowers in a vase against a neutral backdrop, she also painted snippets of actual landscapes and moved the flowers, as the subject, into the focus, thus creating a new composition of floral subjects which can be termed floral landscapes.
The viewer has the impression of standing in the midst of the scene, inhaling the scent of the blooms. The emphasis on the strong colour palette and the elaboration of the flowers in a pastose manner exemplify how the artist managed to make the colours of her floral images so vibrant. The unique lighting conditions are created by the colours, which were deliberately selected.
The flowers, which are also arranged in bouquets of meadow flowers or wildflowers, are an element to which she devoted much of her painterly interest. The focus is on the wildflower bouquet, positioned on a slant in the field of view and clearly delineated from the dark background. The bunch of flowers, comprising bluebells, forget-me-nots, pansies and campions, is testament to the painstaking reproduction of the meadow flowers.
