The name of Carl Reichert is primarily associated with his animal paintings. However, he began his career as a landscape and veduta painter. It was not until 1870 that he turned to animal portraits and animal paintings, for which he is still famous today. His animal paintings are almost always of small format, executed with oil on panel or canvas.
The 1897 genre painting entitled “Noch nicht hasenrein” features four dachshund puppies who have stolen into the hunting chamber and observe, spellbound, a shot hare. Reichert skillfully captures the young protagonists’ clumsy movements. He renders the puppies’ shiny coat with very delicate brushstrokes, in stark contrast to the hare’s coarser fur. The special charm of this painting lies in its convincing rendering of the dachshund puppies’ typical behaviour.
