Jonas Burgert *

(born in Berlin in 1969)
Treppenspringer, 2005, titled, signed, dated on the reverse Jonas Burgert 2005, oil on canvas, 240 x 210 cm, on stretcher

Provenance:
Galerie 20.21, Essen Private Collection, Germany

Literature:
Daniel J. Schreiber, Hans- Peter Wipplinger, Jonas Burgert, Lebendversuch, Exhibition Catalogue 11.12.2010–6.3.2011 Kunsthalle Tübingen, 27.3-13.6.2011 Kunsthalle Krems, Cologne 2011, cat. no 24, p. 95 (colour ill.)

The paintings of Jonas Burgert assemble a panopticon of representations that enigmatically address what is hidden behind what is visible and stage their compositional structure much like a cryptic play. Even though, while reading the paintings, the viewer immerses him- or herself in an eventful occurrence, he or she is not presented with a concrete narrative.

His primarily large-format compositions are devoted to no less than the drama of life, the history of humanity and the world. In this context the painterly explorations stand within the tradition of the centuries-old motif of a world theater (Theatrum mundi), in which the world becomes a stage, life a performance, and the human being an actor.
Hans-Peter Wipplinger, from the literature cited p. 75
