A screw-top jug,

A screw-top jug, - Umění a starožitnosti

18th century, pewter, hexagonal, floral flat engraving, screw top with handle, spout with hinged lid, height 37 cm, pewter mark distorted, traces of use, (HS)

Provenance:
collection of Felix Karrer (Venice 1825-1903 Vienna) and heirs. Felix Karrer was born in Venice in 1825. After studying law, he worked as an official at the Austrian war ministry. However, he had a passion for geology. He became an unsalaried clerk at the royal court’s mineral collection under Eduard Süß. In 1877, he published a book, entitled Kaiser Franz Josephs Hochquellen-Wasserleitung, detailing findings on which he had worked as a geologist. He became a major collector of stone used for building, thanks to numerous supporters, and also concerned himself with paleontological issues. By 1890, he had amassed a collection of 7000 individual examples, of which 2000 items were transferred to the royal court’s natural history museum in 1883. These were published and made available to the public. Felix Karrer is rightly considered the founder of the most important collection of building and decorative materials in the world.
