manufactured by Atelier de Portalegre, Portugal, 1966, cotton, 100% Australian sheep wool in 36 colours, hand-woven (“Portalegre weaving”), stitched-on textile label on the reverse: Jeu d’Artifice/H 2m28/ L 5m72/ CARTON DE JEAN LURÇAT No. 80.091/ TISSÉ PAR Atelier de Portalegre/ MATRICULE/ No. 1138 and signed: J. Lurçat, approx. 228 x 572 cm. (DRAX)

With confirmation by the Manufatura de Portalegre and certifying that this tapestry is the first of altogether three examples based on this design. The other two examples are smaller. According to the Manufatura’s documentation, one also went to Switzerland whereas the other remained in Portugal.

Swiss company headquarters, conference room, until c. 2008 – private ownership, Switzerland

Between 1958 and his death in 1966, Jean Lurçat closely cooperated with the Portalegre tapestry factory, whose weavers he thought were the best in the world. Numerous of his cartoons were realized there and established the company’s international fame.
