"Das Joachim-Quartett", 1904, etching with roulette and scraping iron on strong wove paper, signed Ferdinand Schmutzer, additionally signed in the plate and dated (on the music sheet), plate size 85 x 124.1 cm, 3 pages with up to 0.5 cm margin, cut on the left on the plate mark, beautiful strong impression of the completed plate, Weixlgärtner 77 VIII (of VI), lower edge with barely noticeable closed tear (c. 5 cm), edges slightly bumped and dusty, framed, (RAC)
In 1904, “(...) Ferdinand Schmutzer completed one of his most remarkable graphic works, the ‘Joachim Quartet’. At the time of its creation this etching (...) was regarded as one of the largest prints in the world. Not only its unusual format, but also the composition of the four musicians caused a stir and made Ferdinand Schmutzer immediately famous” (Bärbel Holaus/Matthias Peschke eds., Ferdinand Schmutzer 1870-1928, Die Musikerporträts, Vienna 2001, p. 19)
