The Vision of Saint Jerome,
oil on canvas, 124 x 103.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Madrid;
where acquired by the present owner

Living in the wilderness as a hermit, Saint Jerome imagined that he heard trumpets sounding the Last Judgment. In the present composition Saint Jerome looks up, interrupted by the sound of a trumpet while he is absorbed in writing. He is flanked by his attributes, a lion and a book.

The painting has been given to Francisco Collantes (Madrid 1599-1656) who was influenced by Jusepe de Ribera. He enjoyed considerable success during his own lifetime and works by him are mentioned in the inventories of many of the most important collections of seventeenth century Madrid.

In the present composition the whole body of the Saint fills the canvas and the influence of Ribera’s tenebrist naturalism is apparent. The stoop and the position of the figure of Saint Jerome also relate to models by Ribera. Such a direct relationship with Ribera was also noted by Antonio Palomino, who mentions a Saint Jerome by Francisco Collantes (see A. Palomino, Las vidas de los pintores y estatuarios eminentes Españoles, London 1742, p. 69).
