Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel I

Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel I - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Antwerp 1564–1635) and
(Brussels 1568–1625 Antwerp)
An extensive mountainous landscape with riders,
oil on panel, 38.5 x 85.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Joos de Momper (landscape) and Jan Brueghel I (figures and animals). A written certificate (September 2020) is available.

Ertz writes: ‘Both the staffage by the elder Jan and the colour of “oxblood red” used by de Momper in the rocks on both sides point to a date of execution around 1610/20; this would fit in with the chromatic division of the landscape into brown (in the foreground), green (in the middle ground), and blue (in the background). The excellently preserved painting, with brushwork handled most delicately by both painters, is further proof of the intensive collaboration between these two artist friends, who jointly executed numerous wonderfully homogeneous works […]. In these collaborative efforts, Josse de Momper always painted the landscape while Jan Brueghel the Elder always added the figures. As de Momper almost never painted figural staffage, the elder Jan was his most important collaborator until his death in 1625.’
