Adam Willaerts
(Antwerp 1577–1664 Utrecht)
A coastal landscape with fishermen unloading their catch,
signed with a monogram lower left: AW,
oil on panel, 38 x 60 cm, framed
Provenance:
with Erich Beckmann, Hannover (according to a label and wax seal on the reverse);
Private collection, Germany
The present picture, with its dramatically ruined castle and ornate galley is an idealised coastal scene and a typical example of the oeuvre of Adam Willaerts. The flat-bottomed boat, drawn up on the shore, with the fish unloaded upon the beach by the fishermen who mill around, adds a sense of realism to the capriccio. The son of religious refugees from Antwerp, Willaerts also painted maritime battle scenes, often as here, skillfully combining foreground figures with expertly drawn ships in the middle distance.
