Jean-Baptiste Claudot, called Claudot de Nancy

Jean-Baptiste Claudot, called Claudot de Nancy - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Badonviller 1733–1805 Nancy)
Shepherds and peasants near a fountain by a ruined arch, a landscape beyond,
oil on canvas, 54 x 70 cm, framed

Jean-Baptiste Claudot was a landscape painter from Lorraine. The son of a lawyer at the sovereign court of Lorraine, Claudot became a pupil of Jean Girardet and André Joly and later he went to Paris to finish his studies with the celebrated painter Claude-Joseph Vernet. Claudot’s stay in Paris was brief, however, for he returned to Nancy in 1765. The lasting influence of Vernet and his Italianate landscapes were to be of fundamental importance in the development of Claudot’s own landscape paintings.

In the case of the present painting, the landscape and figures are highly idealised and decorative. The paintings are not views of specific, identifiable places, but derive from Claudot’s own observations. A similar pastorally idyllic painting with figures by a ruined arch is conserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nancy (see C.G. Marcus, Jean-Baptiste Claudot: Peintre de Nancy [1733-1805], Paris 1970, fig. 2).
