Hokusai (1760-1849)
![Hokusai (1760-1849) - Nábytek Hokusai (1760-1849) - Nábytek](/fileadmin/lot-images/37X210412/normal/hokusai-1760-1849-7120369.jpg)
"Sôshrokkei" (The Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji), nishiki-e, The series and picture title are in a cartouche at the upper left of the picture, signature: zen Hokusai (also translated: saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu). Signature to the right of the series and image title cartouche, publisher: no publisher’s seal (Nishimuraya Yohachi is generally accepted as the publisher), no censor seal. Sometimes zai is written instead of hidari. However, the sign in question is that for hidari. Compare the present sheet with MFA, Boston No. 11.17622 and 21.5389, British Mus., no. 1937,0710.127, ibid. no. 1928.0322.06, ibid. no. 1907,0516,0.1, Art Institute Chicago, no. 1925.3234, Honolulu Academy of Art, no. 21968, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, JP 2981, ibid. JP 20, MAK, Vienna, no. KI 10995. According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, the present sheet (which is available to him as a photograph) is an impression from the original woodblocks. The print was made very late, because the printing plates were already very saturated. As a result, paint becomes blurry in areas where it is concentrated. Also, the characters of the signature have thicker lines. In the front blue, the paint application is poor in contrast and blotchy. The colour application often does not follow the outlines. The sheet is trimmed at its upper margin, with loss of the upper margin of the cartouche. The sheet is also soiled and rubbed. It shows a strong central longitudinal fold, backed on the reverse, slightly stained, attached to support, mounted, 24.1 x 36.4 cm, (CT)
