Hokusai 1760-1849

Hokusai 1760-1849 - Nábytek

Mikawa no Yatsuhashi no (Eight-Part Bridge at Mikawa, Old View), from the series: "Shokoku meikyô kiran" (Rare Views of Famous Bridges in the Provinces), (series and sheet title in a red-ground vertical cartouche at upper right in the image), nishiki-e, according to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, the present sheet was printed posthumously with the original woodblocks. The printing blocks of this series have been heavily worn due to a high print run (low-contrast and broken black lines). Late prints were made in which the woodblocks were slightly reduced in size. In these prints, the sheets have been framed with a black line. An early edition can be seen in Seiji, Nagata (ed.), Hokusai. Berlin, 2011, p. 348, no. 296 (Sumida City). A later state (without bokashi at the top of the mountain in Calza, Gian Carlo: Hokusia. Berlin, 2006, p. 327, no. V.47.11 (Honolulu Academy of Arts), in the MFA, Boston, no. 21.10188 there is a sheet with the sky coloured throughout. The sheet in the British Museum, London, No. 1902,0212,0.359 shows a new series title cartouche (ireki) shifted to the left. The position of the old cartouche is still recognisable. The signature has survived. Without kiwame and publisher's seal at bottom left of the image. The sky is uncolored. The sheet in the MET, N. Y., JP1398 shows the shortenings of the black plate and the added black frame. The signature has been removed. The upper part of the sky is red instead of blue. The water is completely light blue (instead of only in the middle area in bokashi technique) with a dark blue overprint in bokashi technique. The kiwame and publisher's seal at bottom left of the image are missing. The mountain was again overprinted at its top in bokashi technique. The present sheet also corresponds to this later altered state. Good colours, not backed. The print image shows the heavy consumption of the printing plates. According to Gordon Friese, this sheet was printed posthumously. With minor staininig, 23.4 x 34.9 cm,(CT)
