Giuseppe Bernardino Bison - Obrazy 19. století

Born in Palmanova del Friuli, Giuseppe Bison spent about thirty years in Trieste after undertaking his initial training and a period of work in Venice, which he devoted to the repertoire of interior decoration and numerous vistas and landscapes.

Vedutism developed in Venice, above all, because this major lagoon city was the destination of hordes of foreign tourists at the time. Their travels were in part sparked by the fashion of the “Grand Tour”, which was in vogue among the nobles and wealthy bourgeoisie. These rich tourists were in the habit of buying works commissioned from good artists depicting the very places they were visiting – and these 18th-century artists included Canaletto.

The subject presented here is based on the version entitled “The Regatta on the Grand Canal”, which came to the British royal collections from Joseph Smith, a famous British diplomat who lived in Venice, where he was heavily involved in the art trade. It is, however, a more simplified version in terms of the number of boats and figures, and also has a greater focus on the perspective of Palazzo Balbi on the left.

This painting depicts a bustling city undergoing its daily transformation and shows us the tightly packed traffic of gondolas and boats. There is a clear sky, almost taking up half of the painting.
The panorama becomes much wider in front of the viewer’s eyes, instead tending to compress slightly towards the horizon.

Giuseppe Bison, who was a follower of Canaletto in the nineteenth century, was devoted to tradition and can be considered the most passionate Canalettian. As a result, he replicated the expansive Venetian views by paying great attention to the details of the palaces. He devoted himself to the vignettes that animate the city.
