Luca Signorelli

Luca Signorelli - Obrazy starých mistrů II

(Cortona 1450–1523)
Saint Roch,
tempera on panel, 32.5 x 24.3 cm, integral frame

The present painting can be compared to a painting of Saint Roch by Luca Signorelli and Workshop with an inverted composition, in the Accademia di Carrara, Bergamo (No. 58MR00078).

Saint Roch can be identified by his attributes, the mark of the plague on his thigh and the hat and the stick which symbolise his pilgrimage. He was born in Montpellier at the beginning of the fourteenth century into a wealthy family but left the comfort of his life behind and embarked on a long journey to Rome. During his time in Italy, the peninsula was hit by the epidemic of bubonic plague which devastated Europe between 1347 and 1353. Saint Roch compassionately assisted the ill, which resulted in his own infection: he is therefore represented showing the mark of the plague on his thigh. Following the second epidemic of 1477–79 the image of Saint Roch, who was celebrated as a plague saint, gained renewed popularity and was often commissioned as an object of devotion.
