Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Starožitnosti - Část 1

Red shark with pepper twigs, from the “Uo zukushi” series (Fish Series), nishikie, signed Ichiryusai Hiroshige ga, publisher Eijido, dated c. 1832-34, with Kyoka poem by Shizugaki Namiyasu: "Otomego ga tedama mo yura ni kuridasu tai no mebari mo so ito wa hikikeri", "Shibaura ni arau akame wa Tago no ura yuhi no iro mo asamu-kinu beshi "The red sea bream bathed by Shiba Bay - even the colour of the sunset at Tago Bay seems to pale in comparison". The sheet was originally printed on behalf of the poets’ club, the name of which appears before the poems, no publisher’s seal. According to Gordon Friese, to whom we owe this expertise, the poem on the left of this sheet is normally missing. Whether a first print with the two poems exists (in Heidelberg), as the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, suggests, is a question that remains unanswered. See sheet BI 24663, MAK, Vienna, left poem missing, without publisher’s seal), Suzuko, Juzo "Utagawa Hiroshige", Tokyo 1970, III. 590 (left poem missing, without publisher’s seal). After the first print, a commercial edition (with publisher's seal) of the same printing blocks was published by Eijudo. In the course of the printing period of impressions of these blocks a line at the upper lip of the fish was lost. Copies of the commercial edition are preserved in: Minneapolis Museum of Art, No. P.75.51583, British Museum, No. 1902,0212,0.392, Harward Art Museum, No. 1933. 4.263. Prints from other woodblocks also exist. They can be recognised by the first scales above the fish eye. Also, the characters show different swings. Whether these prints are contemporary, or where they were made at the beginning of the 20th century (before 1926), cannot be established at the moment. Chazen Museum of Art No. 1980.1964 (Ex Frank Lloyd Wright). The sheet has full margins, is stained, the upper blue bokashi border is shifted by almost 1 cm upwards, good impression and colours, 25.8 x 37.3 cm, framed,(CT)
