Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Sunamura Motohachiman (The Shrine of Moto-Hachiman, Sunamura), from the "Meisho Edo hyakkei" series (Hundred Views of Edo), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige hitsu, publisher Uoya Eikichi, dated 1856 (Ansei 3, month 4), censor seal aratame dragon 4. The present sheet is a version of sheet acc. no. 11.36876.21 from the MFA, Boston, hence probably one of the early prints. Both sheets have the same blank areas at the left margin, the colours are equally vivid, the bokashi is nearly identical, only the overprinting in the pines in the foreground is in a different place than in the Boston sheet, where it can be found in the lower part of the pines in the foreground; the successful transition from blue-green to light green in the path is nearly identical. Trimmed, but the aratame and date seal are fully visible, publisher's seal at the left side slightly trimmed, at the top the light part of the sky more heavily stained, at the right margin outside the image area two very small traces of wormholes, at the back upper margin a small trace of glue, partly backed, very good impression and colours, 36 x 23,5 (overall dimensions), (CT)
