Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Mitsuke, Tenryugawa funewatashi (Ferry on the Tenryu River), sheet no. 29 from the series: “53 Famous Views of Tokaido”, also called Vertical Tokaido), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige hitsu, publisher Tsutaya Kichizo (Koeido), censor seal: aratame, Hare 7, dated 1855 (Ansei 2, month 7). The present sheet looks like a later version of sheet acc. no. 21.5272 from the MFA in Boston. Both sheets show the same blank area on the left edge above the mountain in the border line; the same applies to two similar segments in the middle of the lower border line. In addition, the central segment of the wood grain at the very bottom in the middle looks identical. In the present sheet, the colours are slightly oversaturated. The sheet is backed, both side margins are additionally reinforced at the back, almost full margins, minimally wavy, 36.5 x 24.5 (overall dimensions),(CT)
