Vlaho Bukovac
(Cavtat 1855–1922 Prague)
Portrait of Architect Matej Blecha (1861–1919) and His Wife Milada Blecha, neé Choderova (1864–1921), dated 1914, both signed, dated Vlaho Bukovac Praha 1914, oil on canvas, each 120 x 85.5 cm, framed (frame slightly damaged)
It is no exaggeration to say that Matěj Blecha (1861-1919) is one of the architects and builders who began to give Prague a modern face between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The resulting beauty has, in many significant cases, been preserved to this day.
A number of important buildings are among the treasures of modern Czech architecture. They include the Rococo Palace, the Diamond House and Adam’s Pharmacy on Wenceslas Square, on all of which Blecha collaborated with Emil Králíček (1877-1930).
