Jan Philips van Thielen

[Saleroom Notice]
Jan Philips van Thielen - Obrazy starých mistrů I

(Mechelen 1618–1667 Boisschot)
Roses, a peonie, forget-me-nots, morning glories and other flowers in a glass vase,
signed lower right: J.P. van Thielen R,
oil on copper laid down on panel, 45 x 31 cm, framed

Saleroom Notice:

oil on copper laid down on panel

Provenance:
with Galerie Grünwald, Munich, 1985

We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs. He dates the painting to the second half of the 1640s and compares it to a painting, dated 1648 (see RKD, The Hague, image no. 69470). The ‘R’ after his signature stands for ‘Rigouldts’ and was part of his name.

Having spent his apprenticeship with Theodoor Rombouts and Daniel Seghers, van Thielen became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1641/42. His wife Francisca was the sister-in-law of Erasmus Quellinus, with whom Van Thielen collaborated frequently (in many cases, Quellinus painted the cartouches for van Thielen’s floral garlands). In 1660, van Thielens returned to his native town of Mechelen, where he joined the local painters’ guild. His flower paintings betray a strong influence of his teacher, Daniel Seghers, although his colours were sharper and his drawing was less precise.
