The company Max Welz was founded by Johann Welz as a frame shop in Vienna in 1870. After his death in 1896, it was taken over by his nineteen-year-old son Maximilian Welz (born in 1876). The latter was trained by a sculptor and as a gilder, and eventually transformed the company into a centre for the production of frames and frame mouldings at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1896, the company moved to Neudeggergasse 5 in Vienna’s 8th district. After relocating to Schottenfeldgasse 45 in the 1920s, the company returned to its previous site in the 8th district after World War II and continued to operate there as the art shop and frame production ‘Kunsthandlung und Rahmenerzeugung Franz Uhlig’.
