A cuckoo clock / wall sculpture Cuckoo Block “Hamburg Kirchdorf-Süd”, Guido Zimmermann

2019, box-shaped construction made of wood, MDF, acrylic glass, buttons, LED lighting with battery, paint, electronic clock and mechanism, adjustable volume, including instruction manual. Dimensions height c. 78 cm, width c. 26 cm, depth c. 14 cm. Without guarantee for precision of movement and long-term functioning. (MHA)

With original certificate.

A serial unique example number 16 from the limited series of this model of 25 pieces. Due to their painted décor, each clock is a serial unique piece.

Although each clock works like a classic cuckoo clock, it can be programmed and the cuckoo only comes out during the day. The cuckoo call can be completely silenced via a volume control. “Cuckoo Blocks” are Zimmermann’s answer to the traditional Black Forest cuckoo clocks. They feature a contemporary view of urban living and architecture. The shell is new, yet the soul - a clockwork with cuckoo - is old. Two of its features are of particular importance, namely buildings with a striking history and architectural value, and housing in socially deprived areas. Both elements find a connection through the blocky, solid concrete construction. Classic cuckoo clocks stand for the prosperity of the middle classes and are regarded as a luxury item for their home. The modern version as a prefabricated building shows today’s urban and social life in apartment blocks. No less interesting is the second feature of “Cuckoo Blocks”. For example, Erno Goldfinger’s ‘Glenkerry House’, built in the striking style of Brutalism, once offered accommodation for the average citizen. Today, it is associated with the ‘hip’ and barely affordable living in London. The hotel ‘La Flaine’ by Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer is at once beautiful architecture and an eyesore, since this huge hotel complex is located in the middle of the French Alps.” (https://www. guidozimmermann. a art/the-artwork, 09.03.2022)
