Josef Carl Berthold Püttner

Josef Carl Berthold Püttner - Obrazy 19. století

(Plan 1821–1881 Vöslau)
Venice, a View of the Bacino di San Marco from Riva degli Schiavoni, signed, dated J. C. B. Püttner 1873, oil on canvas, 80 x 157 cm, framed

Josef Carl Püttner was a German-Austrian landscape and marine painter who worked mainly in Vienna and then in Bad Vöslau from 1869. In 1846-47 he went on a study trip to Rome and the Netherlands. He travelled to North and South America in 1852 and 1853 with the German shipping company Godeffroy, aboard whose ships he was granted free passage. He exhibited regularly at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1842 and was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus from 1861.

The present panoramic view of Venice looks towards Santa Maria della Salute from the Riva degli Schiavoni. Some of the city’s most famous landmarks can be seen: the Doge’s Palace, the Piazzetta, the Libreria and St Mark’s campanile, which dominates the skyline. It illustrates the everyday life of the local people depicted strolling along the Riva. Some are selling fruits and vegetables while others are unloading their catch. It is a serene composition showing the artist’s sense of light and perspective.
