Ernst Stache

Ernst Stache - Obrazy 19. století

(Oberpeilau 1849–1895 Munich)
Rome, View of the Arch of Constantine, signed E. Stache München, oil on canvas, 83 x 107 cm, framed

The Arch of Constantine in Rome was built in 315 AD to commemorate the Battle of the Milvian Bridge three years earlier, in which Emperor Constantine defeated his rival Maxentius.
Originally, a quadriga probably crowned the three-arched structure; however, according to tradition, this was stolen or destroyed during the Sack of Rome in the 5th century. It is located not far from the Colosseum and spans the famous Via Triumphalis. At 21 metres high, it towers over the other two triumphal arches in the Roman Forum. Parts of the arch, especially the reliefs, come from much older buildings and were reused after being reworked.
The German landscape painter Ernst Stache was intensely concerned with depictions of Italian - especially Venetian and Roman - architecture.
In the present lot, the Arch of Constantine blends into the everyday life of the city and provides an ancient backdrop to the summer bustle of people and animals.
