Jan Cossiers
(Antwerp 1600–1671)
Cephalos and Procris (Ovid, Met. VII, 795–866),
oil on canvas, 89.5 x 118.9 cm, framed
We are grateful to Bert Schepers of the Rubenianum, Antwerp for suggesting the attribution to Jan Cossiers on the basis of a photograph (private communication). Schepers compares the handling and use of colour in the present work to Heraclitus and Democritus, previously with Hoogsteder and Hoogsteder, The Hague. He further compares it with the angels with Cossiers’s Arma Christi in the Rubenshuis, Antwerp, and the master’s St. Nicolas in the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille.
Cossiers was one of the most versatile painters of the Antwerp School. Studying with the Dutch Master Abraham de Vries in France, he later went to Rome where he imbibed the dramatic influence of the works of Caravaggio. Returning to Flanders, he was favoured by Peter Paul Rubens, of whom he likely had formerly been a pupil. Rubens’s influence secured him important commissions, with Cossiers assisting the great master on the decoration for the Joyous Entry of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand into Antwerp in 1635.
