Giuseppe Signorini

Giuseppe Signorini - Obrazy 19. století

(Rome 1857–1932)
Praying at the Mosque, signed Giuseppe Signorini Paris-Roma, watercolour on paper, 87 x 60 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy.

Exhibited:
Cremona, Celebrazione Bicentenario Stradivariano 1° Fiera Nazionale dell’800, May-October 1937, no. 103.

“An Arab praying in a mosque“ is a powerful evocation of the Muslim world. Two men are absorbed in prayerful contemplation and have taken off their shoes for the prayer sequence. The photographic realism of the painting can be traced, in part, to Signorini’s rigorous academic training in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca, and, in part, to the extensive collection of Islamic objects, textiles and carpets that he collected in the Maghreb. A few details in the present lot reveal the attention paid to his subject, such as the elaborate clothing, the weapons and the rugs.

His style was particularly influenced by noted Orientalist artists Jean-Léon Gérôme and Mariano Fortuny. “An Arab praying in a mosque“ demonstrates Signorini’s fascination with the Muslim world and his desire to record this culture in painstaking detail. His frequent trips to the Maghreb provided him with inspiration.
