The painter Hermann Franz Anschütz was born in Koblenz. He showed great artistic merit as a schoolboy and received his first lessons at the art academy in Dresden. In 1822 he moved to Düsseldorf, where he was taught by Peter von Cornelius. He travelled to Munich with his teacher, and was allowed to create a ceiling fresco in the Odeon Hall. After this he came to the attention of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who funded a study trip to Italy for him. Anschütz stayed in Naples in 1830/31, where he painted the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Back in Munich, he used his sketches to create frescoes for the dining room of the new royal residence. In 1847 Hermann Anschütz was employed as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich and devoted himself primarily to religious art.
