Johannes Gerardus Keulemans was a Netherlandish painter and illustrator. Already at a young age, he was an enthusiastic nature lover and wanted to become a researcher. Hermann Schlegel, the then director of the Imperial Museum of Natural History in Leiden, supported him and sent him on an expedition to West Africa in 1864 to discover and draw new bird species. In 1866 Keulemans returned to Europe and was recommended by Schlegel for the British Museum. From 1869 on Keulemans worked in Great Britain, where many great ornithological reference books were compiled in the 19th century. He colored numerous lithographic plates of important ornithological works, including the "Monograph on Kingfischers", the "Catalogue of the birds" and "A History of the birds of New Zealand". Johannes Gerardus Keulemans, who was also called John Gerard Keulemans became the most famous illustrator of birds in his time. Many lithographs of him are kept in the American Museum of Natural History in New York today.
