Karl Wenzel Zajicek

(Vienna 1860-1923)
Tuchlauben in Vienna with the building of the "Strampfer-Theater" and of the former Musikverein, signed K. Zajicek, watercolor on paper laid down on cardboard, 19 x 13,5 cm, mounted, framed, (BH)

The building with the striking semicircular window at Tuchlauben no. 558 (today no. 12) housed two famous Viennese cultural institutions. The old Musikverein building was located here from 1829 on, but was rebuilt under the architect Franz Lössl in 1831. Although it only had 700 seats, the concert hall was used for 40 years. In 1870, the Musikverein moved to the newly constructed building on Karlsplatz and the building on Tuchlauben was acquired by Friedrich Strampfer, who had recently resigned as director of the Theater an der Wien. After extensive renovations to the concert hall, actors such as Alexander Girardi and Carl Blasel performed in the new "Strampfer-Theater"; however, the business was barely profitable and went bankrupt a few years later. From 1885 on, the building was demolished together with the neighboring house; they were replaced by the Mattonihof, which still exists today,
