We are grateful to Jeroen Kapelle of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Dokumentatie, RKD, for his assistance in cataloguing this work.

Following family tradition Willem Bodeman was trained as a tradesman before deciding to turn his amateur love of painting into his profession at the age of 20. As the first pupil of Dutch landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, he was trained in romantic depictions of the nature. Teacher and pupil, who became close friends over time, undertook several journeys to Germany to the city of Kleve where Bodeman focused on representations of woodland and winter landscapes. Here he met and was influenced by the important Belgian animal painter Eugène-Joseph Verboeckhoven who decorated several of Bodeman’s landscapes with his animals. One of Willem Bodeman’s paintings can be found in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (Compare: Herman De Vilder, Kris Van de Ven, Eugène-Joseph Verboeckhoven (1798–1881), p. 287–290, 2006).
