The marine and landscape painter Ferdinand Perrot, pupil of Theodore Gudin, was renowned for his watercolours and lithographs. Perrot spent the last years of his life in Russia, dedicating his lithographs of views of St. Petersburg to Tsar Nicholas I. This watercolour Stormy Seas reflects Perrot’s impressions of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, which the artist had sailed since 1837. Perrot’s works were regularly exhibited at the Salon from 1831 to 1844.
