Lot No. 60

Émile Charles Hippolyte Vernet-Lecomte

Émile Charles Hippolyte Vernet-Lecomte - 19th Century Paintings

(Paris 1821–1900)
Oriental Beauty, signed, dated E. Vernet Lecomte 1869, oil on canvas, 117 x 77.5 cm, framed, (GG)

The present lot demonstrates Émile Vernet-Lecomte’s talent as a portraitist, paired with his skill in depicting the details of oriental costume. Here we see a young girl dressed in fabrics of rich colour. She is pictured standing and looking directly at the viewer.
Vernet-Lecomte exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1843. In 1847 he presented his first properly orientalist pictures. The artist’s compositions are mainly portraits of women, remarkable both for their fine detail and for their breathtaking beauty.
It is probable that he travelled to the Levant. Lynne Thornton, in her book The Orientalists: Painter-Travellers, mentions a painting by Vernet-Lecomte, executed in Cairo in 1863, so we strongly suggest that the artist travelled to the region in the 1860s.
