German family property since around 1920.

A signed sketch of this painting, Bergère au tricot, pencil on paper, 50 x 31.5 cm, was auctioned by Osenat, Fontainebleau in 2007.

Georges François Paul Langée quickly followed in the footsteps of his father, the famous Realist painter Désiré François Langée (1823–1896). He studied at the École des Beaux-Artes from 1870 and worked at the studio of Isadore Pils and Henri Lehmann. He loved working in the open air and his preferred motifs included farmers with their animals or working in the fields. The artist’s works are held by many French museums.
