Franz Richard Unterberger studied at the Munich Academy under Clemens Zimmermann and Julius Lange. This was followed by a study trip to Milan. In 1860 the artist moved from Munich to Düsseldorf and here he met the brothers Oswald and Andreas Achenbach who were to have a significant influence on his artistic oeuvre. Unterberger also undertook extended journeys to the north, to Denmark and Norway, as well as to the English and Scottish coasts. Inspired by several sojourns in Italy, during his later artistic career he increasingly turned to the depiction of the southern landscapes that were to characterise his oeuvre.
