Provenance:
Relatives of the artist in Munich; thence by descent to the current owner.

Jan Chelminski first studied at the drawing school in Warsaw and with Juliusz Kossak. In 1873 he moved to the Munich Academy where he became a pupil of Alexander Strähuber and Alexander Wagner, and later of Jozef Brandt and the horse painter Franz Adam. He painted genre and sports scenes and, especially after 1890, battle scenes.These were characterized by their meticulously reproduced depictions of uniforms and weapons. He exhibited successfully in Munich, Berlin, Vienna, London and Paris, and sojourned repeatedly in New York. (Cf. Saur, Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon, Leipzig 1998, Vol. 18, p. 381f.)
