Emil Volkers first studied in Dresden under the direction of Ernst Rietschel and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld before moving to Munich in 1852 to study with Albrecht and Franz Adam and to Düsseldorf where he studied from 1857. In 1867 he travelled to Romania and in 1869 to Italy in order to study the rural populations in these countries (Cf. Boetticher, p. 943).
