Initially working as a lithographer at Ferdinand Piloty’s art institute in Munich, Franz Maria Ingenmey studied under the self-taught figure painter Erich Correns. He then settled in Düsseldorf as a painter, exhibiting in Berlin, Munich and Vienna. His paintings depict individual figures as well as group scenes, in a narrational or humorous manner.
