Friedrich Christian Nerly
(Erfurt 1807–1878 Venice) View of Venice, signed F. Nerly, inscribed on the reverse in the artist’s own hand F. Nerly, Venezia, oil on canvas, 60 x 97 cm, framed, (Rei)
Friedrich Christian Nerly arrived in Hamburg at an early age to live with relatives after the death of his father. He was supported and taught to paint by the artist H. J. Herterich and his patron, Baron Carl Friedrich von Rumohr. In 1828 they travelled to Italy where they stayed in Rome until 1835. Nerly was one of the founding members of Rome’s art society, a member and Generalissimus of the Ponte-Molle Society, co-founder of the German Künstleralbum (1834) and director of the Cervarofeste to 1835. From 1835 onwards Nerly lived in Venice where, apart from his travels, he remained until his death. He specialised in Venetian vedute (Cf. Thieme-Becker, Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler, Vol. 25, Leipzig 1931, 391 and 392).
We are grateful to Dr. Wolfram Morath-Vogel (Kulturdirektion Erfurt) for confirming the authenticity of the work after the examination of the painting in original.
Letter of authentication issued by Dr. Wolfram Morath-Vogel, September 2013 available.
