Carl Ludwig Kaaz (Katz)

Carl Ludwig Kaaz (Katz) - 19th Century Paintings

(Karlsruhe 1773–1810 Dresden) Landscape, View of Ischia, signed, dated (ligature) CKz pinx. 1808, gouache and watercolour on paper on board, 43.5 x 60 cm, framed, (Sch)

Carl Ludwig Kaaz initially studied as a bookbinder and learnt the skills of engraving during a journey through Switzerland. He later turned to painting, receiving his education in Stuttgart and Dresden. He gained many impressions during his long sojourn in Italy from 1801 to 1804, and made sketches which he used as the basis for paintings, notable for their warm colours, after his return to Germany. The artist was in close contact with Friedrich Schiller and Wolfgang Goethe who praised Kaaz in his annals as a talented painter who was capable of turning “Goethe’s dilettantish sketches into a painting of worthy appearance”. The artist also executed a half-length portrait of the poet which hangs today in the Goethe Museum in Weimar (see: copy of an article of the Illustrierte Zeitung, no. 4283, 28 April 1927 attached to the painting’s reverse).
