Lot No. 136

Rudolf von Alt

(Vienna 1812–1905) St Mark’s Square in Venice, signed and indistinctly dated Rudolf Alt 183 (probably 1835) , watercolour on paper, 20 x 26.5 cm, Passepartout, framed, (Hu)

Compare: Walter Koschatzky, Rudolf von Alt 1812–1905, Die schönsten Aquarelle aus den acht Jahrzehnten seines Schaffens, Salzburg, Vienna 1989, ill. p.144; Marie Louise Sternath, Rudolf von Alt, Exhibition Albertina, 2005, Ill. p.118. “Rudolf von Alt succeeds, in this small format, in depicting every type of surface characteristic as well as the structure and the essence of the architecture. The figured canopies of St Marks project into the sky with the appearance of open lace and he has captured the multi-coloured patterning of the west facade of the Doge‘s palace equally magnificently. In the shapes glimpsed between the Doge‘s palace and the red flagstaffs towering like signals we recognise San Giorgio Maggiore.“ (Sternath, p.116.)
