Lot No. 201 #

Henry Bonaventure Monnier

(Paris 1805–1877) A portrait of Monsieur Joseph Prudhomme, signed and dated Henry Monnier, Juin 1866, inscribed with a dedication „à mon vieil ami...“, pen and black ink, over pencil, on paper, ca. 23 x 16 cm, browned (matburn), mounted, framed, (Sch)

Monsieur and Madame Prudhomme were caricatures of French philistinism which appeared in Henry Monnier's play „Scènes de Province“ in 1830 for the first time. In 1852 another play „Grandeur et décadence de M. Joseph Prudhomme“ appeared followed by two drawing volumes titled „Mémoires de Monsieur Joseph Prudhomme“ (in 1857) and „Monsieur Prudhomme chef des brigands“ (in 1860) whose figures were to inspire other artists in the twentieth century as well. Paul Verlaine, for example, received suggestions by Monnier in his „Poèmes saturniens“ and André Franquin refers to caricatures by Monnier when he created his „Maire de Champignac“ in his drawings volume „Spirou und Fantasio“ (1950).
