The present drawing is a mirror-inverted copy of an oval shaped painting by Agostino Carracci for the Camera del Poggiolo in the Palazzo dei Diamanti (today in the Galleria e Museo Estense, Modena). The picture was part of a mythological cycle with portraits of antique gods, of which thirteen still exist today. Five paintings, among them "Pluto", were executed by the brothers Carracci.
