Lot No. 7 #

Albrecht Dürer

(Nuremberg 1471–1528) John the Baptist and Saint Onophrius in the desert, woodcut, monogrammed AD, 21.2 x 14 cm, watermark: an air bladder, date of print c. 1580, Meder 230, Bartsch 112, Strauss 84, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

A fine print with rich contrasts and a deep impression, on thin wove paper with narrow margins. Tiny restored tears at upper right corner. The point of the lower left corner added. The state of the impression cannot be determined quite well due to features which point to early as well as late impressions. Unbroken silhouettes and outlines in the hill in front of the mountain and in the lower line of the roof at the top of the house. The left and lower right margin lines with cracks, one crack missing along the lower left half of the sheet. The paper is showing the fragment of a watermark with an air bladder, which was dated by Meder to 1580. Most likely the copy was done by a talented artist who carefully cared to get out most of the block as opposed to earlier impressions. The overall impression is surprisingly good particularly when compared to the copy illustrated by Strauss.
