Lot No. 5

Albrecht Dürer

(Nuremberg 1471–1528) The Man of Sorrows, iron etching, dated 1515 in the plate, 10.9 x 6.9 cm, Bartsch 22, Meder 22 II (of III), the plate polished in the empty background, otherwise extensively overworked; with the stone and the coat being extended at the left and the handle of the scourge changed, a restored tear, the left and right margins trimmed outside the plate marks, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Between 1515 and 1518 Dürer experimented with iron etching on six sheets. The first attempt was supposedly the Man of Sorrows (M.22), Friedländer considers the Desperate Man (M.95) being the first sheet because it is neither dated nor monogrammed. With obligue framing lines and the margin lines rounded.
