Hans Sebald Beham

(Nuremberg 1500-1550 Frankfurt)
Saint Christopher and the half moon in an aureole, c. 1528, woodcut on laid paper, 30,5 x 21,8 cm, Pauli and Hollstein 892a, Geisberg 213, Bartsch VII, app. 16 (as Dürer), Heller No. 2013 (App. 43), mounted, unframed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Private collection, Austria.
Very excellent, early impression in an excellent and original state of preservation, tiny margins along framing lines. With minute foxing, a small tear to the upper right edge of Christ’s coat; no creases and no remains of an old mount on the reverse. Two comparable impressions with the losses and the wormholes in the plate are preserved in the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden and in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Brunswick. In comparison with the two other copies the present impression is printed more vigorously and more evenly particularly in the center area of the block. Very rare sheet, particularly in regard of its quality of print.
