1965 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL

1965 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL - Classic Cars

A Pagoda for driving enthusiasts!

In the 250 SL, Mercedes-Benz presented a first engine upgrade for the Pagoda at the end of 1966. The 250 engine in the W111 did not enjoy the best reputation anyway, as it was commonly regarded as ill-equipped for top speeds and susceptible to the temperature. The 280 SL followed in January 1968 after just a year of construction. It was also based on the saloon, delivered 170 hp that made piecemeal of the small convertibles back then and provided more than just plucky acceleration. Attempts to introduce V8 engines never made it past the experimental stage.

This Pagoda originally entered the world as a 230 SL. According to the consignor, it was converted to a 280 SL back in the 1970s. Naturally, installation of the more powerful engine has been noted in the papers since then. Most recently it was registered to a woman in Munich-Unterhaching, before being sold to the consignor in Austria ten years ago. He gave the SL a fresh coat of paint and added a leather interior with new roof. In addition, he tightened the chassis, placed the SL on 15” wheels to lend it a more sporting look and fitted a Nardi steering wheel to handle the chassis the way it is intended. Altogether he created a thoroughly convincing Pagoda that is a pleasure to drive. And anyone who feels moved to point to the replaced engine should take it out for a spin, which is certain to leave even the last doubter wholly convinced!
